1 Dies In Shootout Between Dostum And Noor Supporters
A shootout between Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum's supporters and supporters of acting Balkh Governor Atta Mohammad Noor broke out in northern Faryab province on Thursday, leaving one dead and five wounded.

Local officials in the province confirmed violence erupted between the two groups.

"One person was killed and five others wounded in the protests," said Sayed Aqa Andarabi, the provincial police chief.

He said that police were dispatched to the area and the situation is now under control.

The alleged removal of a photograph of Dostum from a billboard in the city sparked an outcry earlier this week by his supporters - leading to protests in the streets.

Meanwhile, members of the National Islamic Movement of Afghanistan, a political party led by Dostum, said at a press conference in northern Balkh province that those who removed their leader's photo should be brought to book.

Police in Balkh province said that a delegation of elders is working to resolve the problem through negotiations.

"If Jirga (elders' council), negotiations, and elders cannot solve the problem, then we have the law and government," Sherjan Durani, spokesman for Balkh police headquarters.
