ISIS counterattacks in Palmyra
[ARA News] HOMS ــ Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) on Friday were able to recapture strategic locations northwest of Palmyra city in Syria’s central Homs province, subsequent to clashes with the regime’s army forces.

Syrian army troops had seized main districts in Palmyra on Thursday after fierce battles with ISIS.

Speaking to ARA News in Homs, media activist Amr Musa said that ISIS fighters were able to regain control of the Qubur valley and the area of al-Madafen northwest Palmyra after clashes with pro-Assad forces.

The hardline group followed a scorched earth policy against the pro-regime forces stationed in those areas, targeting them with dozens of artillery shells and rockets.

The source pointed out that ISIS extremists were able to kill at least eight soldiers and injure dozens others from the regime’s forces in the attack on Friday.

ISIS had earlier evacuated Palmyra from its population who headed to the city of Deir ez-Zor and its environs. It also planted a large number of mines in the vicinity of the historic city to constrain movements of the regime’s army forces.
