Gunmen stopped from seizing Nabaa TV
Tripoli-based Al-Nabaa TV, forced off the air on Wednesday, was the scene of fighting last night, when a group of gunmen tried to seize the abandoned building in Zinata, near Suq Al-Juma.

The armed group drove through a check-point in the Ras Hassan district operated by the Bab Tajoura brigade. Brigade members pursued them to the Nabaa station, where prolonged shooting broke out. The building was damaged in the exchanges, from which however there were no reported casualties.

The identity of the gunmen trying to retake the TV channel and it appears seeking to put it back on air is not clear. One report has it that they came from various parts of the city. Their attempt was unsuccessful and after much firing, they withdrew. The Presidency Council has condemned Wednesday’s assault on the station. Some social media activists have also protested at what they see as an attempted clampdown on freedom of expression.

It is widely believed that Nabaa is controlled by Abdulhakim Belhaj.
