6 Egyptian soldiers killed, 6 injured in North Sinai blasts
[AlAhram] Six soldiers were killed and 6 others were maimed when two improvised bombs (IEDs) targeted an army patrol in Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

According to hospital sources in North Sinai, the attack took place on Al-Arish ‐ Sheikh Zuweid Road.

The sources added that the blast also maimed 6 soldiers, who sustained injuries of bruises, fractures, and abrasions in the body.

No group has yet grabbed credit for the attack.

The attack comes only one day after the Egyptian army announced on Monday it has killed 16 turbans and disarmed 24 IEDs planted to target security patrols in Sinai.

Earlier in May, Egypt received an initial shipment of 762 mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles from the United States, which will be used in army operations in the peninsula.

The Egyptian army's latest announcements on the battle against turbans in central and North Sinai during military operations comes during the third phase of an operation entitled Martyr's Right, which was first launched in September 2015.

The Islamist insurgency in the Sinai peninsula spiked after the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi and has killed hundreds of security forces.
