D. C. Muslim activist sentenced to 23 years
A federal court Friday sentenced a Muslim activist to the maximum 23 years for breaking financial sanctions on Libya and lying in tax and immigration forms. Abdurahman Alamoudi, an Eritrean-born naturalized U.S. citizen, was sentenced to 276 months by Judge Claude M. Hilton in Alexandria district court. On July 30, 2004, Alamoudi pleaded guilty to violating the law prohibiting unlicensed travel to and commerce with Libya, making false statements on his application for naturalization and concealing his financial transactions with Libya and foreign bank accounts from the IRS.As part of his plea agreement, the Justice Department said, Alamoudi agreed to cooperate in an ongoing investigation into an alleged Libyan plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah. Alamoudi became a naturalized citizen in 1996.
