Australian anti-immigration demonstrators disrupt church service
[IBT] Anti-immigration demonstrators wearing Muslim attire disrupted a Sunday service at an Anglican church in Australia and performed mock prayer rituals in what would be the latest public protest by the Party for Freedom.
A video of the intrusion was posted on Facebook. In the clip, priest Rod Bower was delivering his sermon when some ten men clad in Muslim garb entered the church, laid down their mats and performed mock prayers. Party for Freedom chairman Nick Folkes said, "We held the protest to challenge (Father Bower's) promotion of Islam and Muslim immigration."
Father Bower said the incident at his church highlights the need for Section 18 of the Racial Discrimination Act. The law considers it illegal to "offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate another person or a group of people" on the basis of race.
"If you lose 18C then this kind of vilification and abusive behaviour will go even more unchecked," he said, following reports that several senators want to eliminate Section 18C, claiming that it restricts freedom of speech.
Before the incident at Gosford, about 50 miles north of Sydney, members of the Party for Freedom have repeatedly worn Islamic clothing in various demonstrations to mock the religion.
