ISIS artillery hits Syrian rebel positions near Raqqa
[ARA News] Raqqa – Militant fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) attacked on Tuesday headquarters of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) north of Raqqa Governorate, in northeastern Syria.

ISIS hit SDF security centres in Ain Issa town with mortar shells, killing and wounding scores of SDF fighters.

“At least three SDF fighters were killed and seven others wounded in the shelling,” local media activist Abdullah Omar told ARA News. “The bombardment has also caused destruction to an SDF security building in central Ain Issa.”

The town of Ain Issa, located in the northern countryside of Raqqa, is a main base for the Syrian Democratic Forces in the governorate. The town is used by the SDF to plan their military operations against ISIS in the vicinity of Raqqa City–which is a de facto capital for the ISIS self-declared Caliphate.

The ISIS attack on SDF positions followed airstrikes by the US-led coalition that hit ISIS headquarters in Raqqa and killed scores of the group’s militants.

“ISIS is aware that the coalition’s airstrikes are aimed at paving the way for the SDF to continue their progress against the group in Raqqa and other parts of northern Syria,” Omar said.
