Military operation commences in Badakhshan
Operation Shafaq 2 was launched in PD9 of Faizabad city, in Badakhshan on Tuesday, following repeated calls by residents over the past few months for a military offensive. Security officials in the province said as a result of the operation, a number of villages have already been cleared of insurgents. “We have launched an operation and it will continue through the winter until the region is cleared of insurgents,” said Mohammad Nabi Bayan chief of Badakhshan's Police Headquarters. Badakhshan’s provincial council meanwhile said although insurgents had suffered causalities on Tuesday, a number of security forces were also killed and wounded. Council officials said the operation will also be carried out in Warduj and Yamgan districts. However, this will be a big challenge for security forces, the council said. “In an ambush by insurgents, a number of security forces were killed and wounded,” said Abdul Bashir Samim, head of Badakhshan provincial council. “Security forces should launch large-scale operations in Warduj and Yamgan districts where main bases of Taliban and foreign fighters are located,” said Abdullah Naji Nazari, member of the council. The provincial police chief confirmed there had been casualties among security forces but said details would only be released once the two districts had been cleared of insurgents. “It is quite natural that in war soldiers will be wounded and killed.
