Nineveh (IraqiNews.com) A security source in Nineveh Province declared that 62 members of the Islamic State were killed by a coalition airstrike, west of Mosul, Alsumaria News reported on Monday.

The source said, “Today, US-led coalition warplanes bombarded the General Hospital building that was used by the Islamic State as a headquarters for foreign immigrants, west of Mosul.”

“The airstrike resulted in the killing of 62 members of the Islamic State, holding Russian, Chechen, French and German nationalities,” the source added on condition of anonymity.

“The airstrike was carried out based on accurate intelligence information and destructed the hospital completely,” the source explained.

“The Islamic State imposed a security cordon around the area of incident and prevented the residents from approaching it,” the source further added.

From ARA News: ISIS HQ under fire in Mosul

Iraqi military operations to retake Western Mosul from ISIS started late Friday, with the US-led coalition forces striking an ISIS command and control headquarters in Western Mosul.

“With the approval of the government of Iraq, Coalition forces struck an ISIS command and control headquarters and propaganda facility in Western Mosul on Feb. 17,” the US-led coalition said.

“The five-story Bab Sinjar administration facility was located in the Al Jumhuri medical community complex. ISIS continues to ignore the Law of Armed Conflict and uses protected sites such as hospitals, schools, and mosques to try and shield themselves from Coalition airstrikes,” the coalition said.

According to the US-led coalition they determined through intelligence that no civilians were in the area, and that the targeted facility was not used for medical purposes by ISIS.

“The intelligence showed that its sole function was as a military command and control facility for ISIS to oversee its operations against the people of Iraq,” the coalition said.

“Daesh still hold about 750,000 people in the west of Mosul and they must now be dealt with. Soon, and at a time of their choosing, the Iraqi Security Forces will move in to start the liberation of West Mosul,” Major General Rupert Jones, UK deputy commander said last week, predicting a tough fight.

“Be under no illusion: The fight will not be easy. The tight streets and alleyways of the old city will be tough to clear. But the Iraqi forces have adapted to ISIS’ tactics and they will drive back the enemy whose finite resources wane with each passing day,” he added.

“It’s worth reflecting on the extraordinary efforts of the Iraqi Security Forces to protect civilians during the tough battle for Mosul. This respect for civilian life is in stark contrast to the enemy’s brutality.
