Trump Invites Duterte to White House During 'Very Friendly' Chat
[PJ] WASHINGTON -- The White House said late Saturday night that President Trump had a "very friendly conversation" with the Philippines leader who is accused of extrajudicial killings in his country and said last fall he would "be happy to slaughter" millions of drug addicts in a comparison of Hitler slaughtering millions of Jews.In December, President Rodrigo Duterte said he had personally killed people he suspected to be criminals while mayor of Davao. One of his ministers claimed he was exaggerating for effect, but in August he said in a message to suspected drug dealers, "My order is shoot to kill you. I don't care about human rights, you better believe me." The White House said the two leaders "discussed the concerns of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) regarding regional security, including the threat posed by North Korea." "They also discussed the fact that the Philippine government is fighting very hard to rid its country of drugs, a scourge that affects many countries throughout the world," the readout of the call added. "President Trump enjoyed the conversation and said that he is looking forward to visiting the Philippines in November to participate in the East Asia Summit and the U.S.-ASEAN Summit." Trump also invited Duterte to the White House "to discuss the importance of the the United States-Philippines alliance, which is now heading in a very positive direction."
