Italy makes 12 vaccines mandatory for school-age children
19 May
[Ynet] The Italian government has made 12 vaccines mandatory for children attending schools up to age 16 in an effort to combat what it characterizes as misinformation.
That's the official, polite explanation.
The measures approved Friday follow an intense public debate over vaccines after a measles outbreak and political sniping over accusations that the populist 5-Star movement had emboldened anti-vaccine advocates.

Premier Paolo Gentiloni told a news conference that the new rules aimed to combat "anti-scientific theories" that have lowered vaccination rates in recent years.

The government approved making 12 vaccines, including measles, rubella and chickenpox, mandatory starting this September for children entering school.

Norway seizes weapons, remands Islamist for four weeks
19 May
[TheLocal.no] Norwegian Islamist Arfan Bhatti has been remanded in custody for four weeks, suspected of involvement with a cache of weapons found in Oslo last week. Oslo District Court believes that there are several grounds on which to suspect that Bhatti may attempt to destroy evidence should he be released, according to the report.

Two others have been arrested, of which one remains in custody while the other has been released, reports NRK.

The Islamist, who has Pakistani parents, was born and brought up in Oslo, where he joined the Young Guns gang in the early 1990s. He later became radicalised, and was jailed for his role in shots fired at an Oslo synagogue in 2006. After being released from prison in Pakistan in 2013, Bhatti warned Norway against joining the US-led coalition against the Islamic State terror group in 2014.
...at the time Mr. Bhatti was a leading figure in Ansar Al-Islam, affiliated with ISIS.
His stepson was last year reported to have been murdered by a rival, who was himself then executed by Isis for the crime.

Danish teen convicted of attempted terrorism gets 6 years
18 May
[Ynet] A Danish court has sentenced a teenage girl to six years in jail, two days after she was found guilty of attempted terrorism by planning bomb attacks against two schools when she was 15.

During the trial at the court northwest of Copenhagen, she admitted making contact with people whom she thought were radical militants.

She was convicted on Tuesday. Prosecutors had demanded her incarceration at a mental institution, but the judge said he didn't find a "fully adequate basis" for doing that.

Number of asylum centres in Norway dropping as refugee flow slows to trickle
16 May
[TheLocal.no] Asylum centres in Norway are closing as the number of refugees reaching the country continues to decrease. Staff at the centre must be given three months’ notice of redundancy. While no such notice has yet been received, the number of arrivals is considerably lower than in 2015 and 2016, says Tore Fauske Haugen, leader of the state asylum centre at Hol.

“On the 1st January 2016, 32,000 asylum seekers lived at asylum centres in Norway. On 1st January 2017 it was 14,500. Today it is 9,924. If that trend continues it will be fewer still by the end of the year which presumably also means fewer centres,” he said.

EU Urges Member Nations to Share more Refugees
16 May
[AnNahar] The European Union's landmark migrant plan to share 160,000 refugees in Italy and Greece among their EU partners is likely to result in less than 40,000 people finding new homes by the September deadline. EU Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said Tuesday that more than 18,000 migrants have been relocated and that 12,500 people in Greece and some 4,000 in Italy are eligible to go. He said those people can be relocated by September, but he noted that some countries haven't relocated a single person, "in breach of their obligations."

Hungary and Poland voted against the plan, but were on the losing side and refuse to take part.

After landing, 11 of the 16 left the aircraft and a family of three were still sitting in their seats near the front when the two men refused to leave their places, according to the report.

[TheLocal.de] On Wednesday the jury in Bautzen, Saxony, convicted a 27-year-old Libyan to a four-month custodial sentence without probation for grabbing a 34-year-old woman’s buttocks three times against her will on a public street.

“It may be the first conviction Germany-wide under the new regulation,” said Judge Dirk Hertle.
