Ending strike after 40 days, Barghouti is now Abbas’s undisputed heir

And only one of his demands was met. But he is now a Paleostinian national symbol. After 40 days and 40 nights of fasting, the Paleostinian prisoner hunger strike came to an end just before dawn on Saturday -- not coincidentally, just before the start of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan. The announcement was accompanied by impassioned proclamations in the Paleostinian media of "a great victory" for the prisoners and by strike leader Marwan Barghouti.
