City negotiating contract to provide air conditioning units to St. Louis jail
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - After hearing the cries of inmates at the St. Louis Medium Security Institution, also known as the Workhouse, the City of St. Louis is negotiating a one-month contract to provide air conditioning to the facility.

During the days of extreme heat in St. Louis, officials said they developed a heat safety plan for the inmates by having cooling stations and round-the-clock medical help in case there are any heat-related illnesses.

Thursday, Aldermanic President Lewis Reed said he had started seeking emergency cooling options for the Workhouse. But the expense would come from city emergency funds.

On Friday, Reed said the city of St. Louis is working on a deal to provide air conditioning units for the facility that will cost $5,500 a month. The city is negotiating a one-month contract with Temp-Air to provide air conditioning to the facility and could budget to $40,000 for the units.

Meanwhile, local activists and organizers have launched a national fundraising effort to bail out as many people as possible from the jail. Local organizations St. Louis Action Council, Arch City Defenders and the National Bail Out Fund are leading the effort.
