French farmer who helped migrants gets longer suspended sentence 8 August [IsraelTimes] A French appeals court on Tuesday increases the sentence against a farmer who has made a point of helping migrants cross the border from Italy, but stops short of jailing him. The court in Aix-en-Provence gives activist Cedric Herrou a four-month suspended sentence — half the length the prosecutor had asked for, but more than his initial sentence. Herrou, an organic olive farmer, is a leading figure in Roya Citoyenne, an association dedicated to helping migrants. Last month he was arrested and charged as he accompanied 156 migrants to Marseille to help them file their asylum requests. German police nab crooks with tighter anti-terror checks 7 August [DW] There are tighter passport controls across the EU this summer, aimed at keeping track of suspected terrorists. A side effect is that police have been able to catch up with other wanted criminals. Jaafar, shu fi? Germany has a problem: frustrated young refugees 7 August [DW] The hostel residents had warned repeatedly about Ahmad A., but nothing was done. Now they feel misunderstood and distrust the authorities. It's an alarming development. Many refugees thought that after two years everything would be fine: language, apartment, work, family reunification. That idea has since been crushed. The processing by the authorities is still dragging on. Some of them still don't have a residence permit. They're struggling with the German language. The German course teaches them the basics, but in order to speak really well they need to have contact with native speakers and practise a lot. Finding an apartment is not easy, even for German citizens. In some cities, getting an appointment with the authorities is like winning the lottery, and the processing takes ages. At the same time, with every passing day their fears grow for their families back home. Many don't know what their lives will be like in six months' time. It's an alarming development when many young people feel they've been abandoned. The state must take care not to lose these people. Many feel they aren't getting enough support. They have no prospects, but they're looking for something to hold on to. Things happen that we don't see and are no longer doing anything about. Groups form according to nationality (Afghans against Arabs) or political allegiance (for/against Assad in Syria). We pay no attention to these conflicts until they result in altercations and violence. We used to see photos from the LaGeSo [State Office for Health and Social Affairs] in Berlin; pictures of crowds of people, waiting. We were outraged. Now these people have become invisible, yet many are still living in refugee hostels. Woman 'barred from French vacation home pool over burkini' 6 August [DW] A report has alleged that a woman vacationing with her family in the southern France city of La Ciotat was kicked out of a vacation home pool due to her full-body swimsuit. The owner then reportedly tried to retain the deposit for pool cleaning fees. Lower Saxony set to ban Islamic face veils in schools 4 August [TheLocal.de] The case of a Muslim pupil refusing to remove her niqab triggered debate in Lower Saxony. Now a new law may mean that full-face Islamic veils will no longer be allowed in state schools.

Migrants from Africa are found clinging to the bottom of a freight train travelling from Valencia to Munich at speeds of up to 93mph 09/08/17 Seven adults and five children were found travelling under a freight train in Raubling, Germany, near the border with Austria. Gambian Migrant Attacks Man with Knife on German Train After Being Told to ‘Calm Down’ 9 August A 27-year-old Gambian asylum seeker has been arrested after he attacked a passenger on an intercity train in Germany with a knife and a glass bottle after the victim urged him to”calm down.” Lorry Drivers Demand Military Deploy to Calais After Deadly Migrant Attacks 8 August Representatives of British lorry drivers have called for the army to be sent to Calais to protect vehicles if attacks and attempted hijackings by migrants do not subside. Swedish Minister Refuses to Strip Returning Islamic State Fighters of Swedish Citizenship 8 August Swedish Interior Minister Morgan Johansson has ruled out the possibility of stripping Islamic State fighters of their Swedish citizenship saying the government refuses to make anyone stateless. Poland Tells EU: We’ll Take Immigrants from Europe – But Not North Africa and the Middle East 8 August Witold Waszczykowski says Poland will welcome migrants from its poor and conflict-stricken European neighbours, but will resist the European Union’s efforts to impose a compulsory quota of migrants from North Africa and the Middle East. Sweden: Police Say Situation ‘Completely Unacceptable’ after 550 Per Cent Rise in Grenade Attacks 6 August The number of hand grenade attacks in Sweden has risen by 550 per cent in just three years, with police describing the situation as “completely unacceptable”.
