12 civilians killed in roadside bombing in southern Yemen
[DAWN] A roadside kaboom killed 12 civilians and maimed four in southern Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic... on Monday when a bomb targeting a military car hit their vehicle instead, a security source said. Two other people, including a soldier, were killed on Monday in separate attacks also in southern Yemen, where the army has launched an offensive against Al Qaeda. The deadliest attack, however, took place in Daleh province. "The bomb was planted on a road in the Qaataba district of Daleh and hit a civilian vehicle instead," said a security source who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to brief the press. Along with most of southern Yemen, Daleh is controlled by government forces loyal to President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi, who is allied with a Saudi-led Arab military alliance in a war against Iran-backed Houthi ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews... rebels. Yemeni special forces, trained by the alliance member United Arab Emirates and backed by the US, launched a major operation in the southern Shabwa province against Yemen's Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula ...the latest incarnation of various Qaeda and Qaeda-allied groups, including the now-defunct Aden-Abyan Islamic Army that boomed the USS Cole in 2000...
