Iraqi forces wrest parts of western Anbar from ISIS

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi joint forces have freed an Islamic State bastion of al-Rummana and areas in its vicinity in west of Anbar, the state-run TV reported.

An offensive was launched to liberate IS-held regions in western Anbar, a commander announced earlier on Saturday.

“Troops of Al-Jazeera Operations Command and the Tribal Mobilization Forces launched a wide-scale offensive to liberate al-Rummana and Rawa regions,” Lt.Gen. Abdul Amir Yarallah, commander of Upper Euphrates and Jazeera Combing Operations, said in a statement.

In related news, a security source said troops managed to invade al-Rummana from several directions.

Speaking to AlSumaria News, the source said, “the seventh and eighth army divisions and the tribal forces invaded al-Rummana in Anbar.”

“The forces, backed by the U.S.-led Coalition and army jets, resume their advance,” the source, who preferred anonymity, added.

The Joint Operations Command denied on Wednesday launching clearance operations in Rummana, warning media agencies from reporting news that harms the military plans of the operations.

Anbar (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State’s legislative mufti was killed, along with two of his companions in an airstrike in western Anbar, Ikhnews quoted a source on Saturday.

“Army jets targeted a hideout for IS in central Rawa, Anbar, which killed the group’s mufti, known as abul Muhajir, an Arab, along with two of his companions,” the source said.

“Abul Muhajir is a prominent IS leader, who is in charge of running the group’s affairs in Rawa,” the source added. “The shelling also destroyed several vehicles destroyed.”

Iraqi joint forces have freed an Islamic State bastion of al-Rummana and areas in its vicinity in west of Anbar, the state-run TV reported earlier on the day. This came after Upper Euphrates and Jazeera Combing Operations launched a wide-scale offensive to liberate al-Rummana and Rawa regions.

Hussein al-Okaidi, mayor of Rawa, said earlier this week that the number of remaining Islamic State militants is estimated at no more than twenty members.

[Al Jazeera] Iraqi forces have launched an offensive to capture one of the last remaining areas under ISIS control in the country.

Two Iraqi infantry divisions and Sunni tribal forces are carrying out the operation in Anbar province.

It is believed ISIS fighters are holding 10,000 civilians hostage in the town of Rawa.

...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS, also known as ISIS), on Saturday in an operation to retake Rawa, the operation's commander said.

Troops backed by paramilitaries recruited among the region's Sunni Arab tribes "launched a major offensive to liberate Rumana and the Rawa area", General Abdelamir Yarallah said.

He later said they had "retaken Rumana and its bridge on the Euphrates" along with 10 other villages.

Rumana is on the north side of the Euphrates just across from al-Qaim, while Rawa, a small town, lies downstream.
