85,000 displaced in 10 weeks of violence in Yemen: UN
[DAWN] The UN said on Friday that surging violence across Yemen  ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...had pushed some 85,000 people from their homes in the past 10 weeks, with hundreds continuing to flee each day. The UN refugee agency said more than 70 per cent of those displaced since December 1 had fled a military escalation in the Hodeida and Taez governorates on Yemen’s west coast. UNHCR voiced particular concern for displaced people remaining in areas close to the hostilities in the two governorates, where conditions are continuing to rapidly deteriorate, "exposing people to violence and disease, without basic services." "Most of those displaced in the governorates of Hodeida and Taez remain hosted by relatives or friends, trapped inside homes or in caves as ground festivities, aerial bombardment and sniper fire rage around them," UNHCR spokeswoman Cecile Pouilly told news hounds in Geneva.
