[MassLive] Daniel Frisiello, the 24-year-old Beverly man who is accused of sending letters containing a suspicious white powder to Donald Trump

Jr. and other public figures, was described by his lawyer as an "overwhelmed young man."

Frisiello appeared in federal court in Worcester on Thursday, where Judge David Hennessy ordered that he remain in jug until a hearing on Monday. He is charged with five counts of mailing a threat to cause injury and five counts of making hoax threats.

Authorities say Frisiello sent the letters containing the powder to the president's eldest son, Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, U.S. Attorney Nicola T. Hanna, Stanford University Professor Michele Dauber, Sen. Deborah Stabenow and California Republican Congressional candidate Antonio Sabato Jr.

The white powder found inside all five letters was deemed not hazardous.

The Beverly man accused of mailing letters with a suspicious white powder to Donald Trump Jr. and other high-profile people across the country will remain in federal custody until a hearing scheduled for Monday.

Frisiello intends to plead not guilty, Gleason said. He did not enter a plea in court on Thursday because the hearing was an initial appearance.

Outside of the courthouse on Thursday, Frisiello's attorney, Scott Gleason, said his clients' parents were not aware that their son sent the letters.

Frisiello's parents declined to comment.

During Frisiello's court appearance, the government expressed a concern regarding medications the defendant may be taking to combat suicidal thoughts.

"He's on medication. That's as far as I'll go with that," Gleason said. "He's been on medication his entire life."

Gleason would not elaborate on what the medication was for or if his client had mental health issues.

Frisiello's parents are overwhelmed, the attorney said.

"It certainly is extraordinarily traumatic for them," he said. "They seem like absolutely wonderful people with an incredible support system and that's why we're very optimistic of getting through this without much more difficulty."

Frisiello is scheduled to return to court Monday. He was tossed in the calaboose
