Police shoot woman who arouses their suspicion in Jerusalem
[IsraelTimes] Officers say suspect, later found to have been unarmed, ignored repeated calls to stop and was shot in the legs, injured

Border Police officers shot a woman in the legs, moderately injuring her, in Jerusalem on Sunday night, after she ignored officers’ calls to stop, police said.

They had feared she was carrying an bomb, but she turned out to be unarmed, police said.

There were was no immediate information on the woman’s identity, and police said "all possibilities are being investigated at this stage."

The woman was spotted by a number of people behaving suspiciously on the tracks of the light rail in the Pisgat Zeev neighborhood in northeast Jerusalem late Sunday night, police said.

At least seven Border Police officers were called to the scene, according to a video filmed by a bystander, which was quickly shared on social media.

"The officers who considered the woman to be suspicious called for her to stop a number of times. After she failed to respond to their calls to halt, they conducted the protocols for stopping a suspicious person, including firing in the air," police said.

Police said the woman, who was dressed in a flowing black niqab covering her body and face, acted in a way that led the officers to believe "that she was carrying an bomb on her person."

The officers then fired at the legs of the woman, in accordance with regulations on dealing with suspicious persons.

A search of the woman revealed that she was unarmed, police said.

She was taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center in moderate condition, police said.

Roads in the area were closed after the incident.
