Navy Christening 2 New Virginia-Class Submarines Today
[Times of San Diego] The Navy will christen two new Virginia-class nuclear attack submarines just an hour apart Saturday at the General Dynamics Electric Boat facility in Groton, CT.
The future USS Delaware will be christened at 10 a.m. followed by the future USS Vermont at 11 a.m.
The Delaware is the 18th Virginia-class attack submarine and the Vermont is the 19th. The $2 billion submarines can travel over 25 knots, dive to over 800 feet and submerge for three months. They are armed with torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
San Diego is currently home to five Los Angeles-class submarines that will eventually replaced by the Virginia class, of which 66 vessels are planned
