One dead after Melbourne knife attack being treated as terrorism - ISIS claims actions of known wolf

VICTIMS

- A man in his 60s died at the scene, while two other victims are in hospital after being stabbed in the upper body by a man shot dead by police

WHEN

- Police responded to reports of a vehicle on fire in Melbourne's CBD about 4.10pm on Friday

WHERE

- The utility was found alight on the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets, a busy shopping area in the heart of the city

WHAT

- Officers were confronted by a man brandishing a knife and making threats. Passers-by told them three members of the public had been stabbed

- An officer shot the man who was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital under police guard, where he later died. He has been identified as someone known to police and who came to Australia from Somalia in the 1990s

RESPONSE

- Streets were cordoned off and people are asked to avoid the area until at least 8am on Saturday

- The bomb response unit attended to conduct safety checks on the vehicle

Somali-born terrorist who stabbed three shoppers, killing one, is named after being shot dead by police - as ISIS claim the lone wolf as one of their own and it's revealed his brother was arrested over a failed terror attack in Melbourne last year

  • Somali-born attacker named as Mohamed Khalif, and also goes by the name of Hassan Shire

  • Attacker was shot in the chest after his knife rampage and died of his wounds in Royal Melbourne Hospital

  • His Holden Rodeo loaded with gas cylinders hit a pedestrian before bursting into flames on the pavement in front of shocked afternoon shoppers

  • Man then stabbed three bystanders before slashing at two police officers who confronted him

  • Video then showed him scuffle with officers before being shot in the chest, and falling to the ground

  • A brave shopper also tried to run him down with a trolley during the chaos before the man was arrested

  • Man rushed to hospital in a critical condition with a chest injury as two others were taken with minor injuries

  • A third man was dead at the scene with his body laying in the street covered with a white sheet

  • Somalian man is reportedly known to ASIO spy agency and has links to terror plotters that are being probed

  • His brother Ali Khalif Shire Ali, 21,
    ...the very connected Somali-Australian known wolf who was arrested in the planning stage...
    was arrested in 2017 for attempting a terror attack in Federation Square on New Years Eve
