Ghani forms 12-member team to negotiate with Taliban
[DAWN] Afghan President Ashraf Ghani ...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..has formed a 12-strong team to negotiate peace with the Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... , but implementation of any deal will take at least five years, he said on Wednesday. He was speaking at a UN conference on the 17-year-old war between Afghan cops and an increasingly confident Taliban, who are fighting to drive out international forces and establish their version of Islamic law. "Presidential elections in the spring are key to successful peace negotiations. "Implementation will take a minimum of five years to reintegrate six million refugees and internally displaced people," he said.
