’s ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani will meet with the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir
Head of the National Congress Party. He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself president-for-life. He has fallen out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it.

The statement which was published on Monday on QNA twitter account, added that both leaders will discuss the fraternal relations between the two countries and ways of promoting them.

No further details were given.

Bashir is expected to arrive in Doha on Tuesday.

On Sunday, Qatar’s emir traveled to Beirut, making a brief presence at the start of the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit.

But the emir had abruptly left for his country after attending the summit for around an hour.

In the meantime, Sudan is struggling with near daily demonstrations triggered by a worsening economic crisis which have shaken the country since Dec. 19. Protesters have called for an end to President Omar al-Bashir’s three-decade rule, blaming him for the country’s problems.
