Arab summit: Confronting Trump diplomacy
[AlAhram] The signal from Tunis is that Trump will not succeed, by force and bluster, to overturn decades of baselines in negotiations for Middle East peace.
“Here,” sez President Donald J. Trump, “hold my beer.”
Last Sunday, 31 March, Tunisia hosted the 30th regular Arab Summit amidst an escalation by the Trump White House against diplomatic gains the Arabs and Paleostinians have achieved in the last 52 years in dealing with the consequences of the Israeli occupation of Arab territories in the June War of 1967.
Let’s see: The Arabs lost the West Bank, Gaza, Sinai, Golan Heights, and East Jerusalem in what the Israelis call the Six Day War. Oh, and the Shabaab Farms corner of Lebanon at the end of the Golan. Of that, Egypt got back the part of the Sinai that’s full of bandits and jihadis in exchange for a peace treaty, but did not have to take back the Palestinans in Gaza; Jordan did not have to take back the Palestinians in the West Bank in exchange for their peace treaty, but they do get to fuss about the running of that mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem; and the West Bank and Gaza get to run their own affairs so long as they don’t trouble Israel. In addition, the Israelis have ignored Muslim sovereignty with impunity to bomb Iraqi and Syrian nuclear facilities to rubble, induce Iranian nuclear centrifuges to spin themselves into splinters, and destroy innumerable shipments of weapons en route as far away as Sudan...

Please do excuse me — I’ve lost track. What diplomatic gains were those?
These gains have been enshrined in UN resolutions that have garnered international support and have provided the legal foundations for what has become known as the "grinding of the peace processor" in the Middle East.
