Afghan Army Commander Killed In Insider Attack

, in Qarabagh district of the province on Wednesday afternoon, a front man for Ministry of Defense Fawad Aman said.

Aman said that Colonel Mujtaba and other security officials were assessing the security situation of checkpoints along the Ghazni-Kandahar Highway when he came under attack by the suspected army soldiers.

One of the attackers was killed and another was maimed, Aman said.

in a statement condemned the attack and said "terrorists" cannot weaken the morale of the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces by such heinous attacks.
Khaama Press adds that the colonel was the commander of the 3rd Brigade of 203rd Thunder Corps. The photo at the link shows a clean shaven gentleman with Special Forces and Commando patches on his left arm.

The Taliban claimed the attack, saying U.S. soldiers had also been killed.

According to Amanullah Kamrani, a member of the Ghazni provincial council, Mateen was boarding a helicopter after a meeting with U.S. advisers when he was attacked.

"The attacker was killed when Americans returned fire," Kamrani told AFP.

Insider attacks, sometimes referred to as "green on green," are a constant threat in Afghanistan.
