Aide to New York Assemblyman Felix Ortiz busted for allegedly stealing $80K from campaign
[NYPOST] A top staffer to veteran Brooklyn state Assemblyman Felix Ortiz was busted Thursday for allegedly stealing $80,000 from a campaign account, officials said.Maruf Alam, 29, of Kensington, served as Ortiz’s chief of staff and represented the Assembly member at community events. Alam is expected to be presented in Brooklyn federal court later Thursday in a case prosecuted by Eastern District US Attorney Richard Donoghue’s office and the FBI. Ortiz, first elected in 1994, is the assistant Assembly speaker, the fifth-highest-ranked member of the Democrat-run house. He represents the 51st Assembly District, which includes Red Hook and Sunset Park. "They were very close. I saw them together all the time," said a source who’s known Ortiz for years. Ortiz has $156,174.19 in his Assembly campaign account, according to his most recent report filed with the Board of Elections. He hasn’t faced a serious challenge for his seat in years.
