Illinois government contractor, 57, is kidnapped in Afghanistan by Taliban-affiliated Haqqani militants
[MAIL] An Illinois man who works as a U.S. government contractor has been kidnapped in Afghanistan by Taliban-affiliated militants.
Mark R. Frerichs, 57, was kidnapped while working in Afghanistan's southeastern province of Khost last Friday, U.S. officials told Newsweek.
The officials believe the kidnapping was orchestrated by the Taliban-aligned Haqqani militant group.
Officials say no one has claimed responsibility yet for Frerichs' abduction and it isn't clear how he captured.
Both the state and defense departments, as well as the FBI's Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, have been helping in the search.
Officials have said the state department often brings in the FBI to handle kidnapping and hostage situations.
The FBI and the departments have not commented on the case involving Frerichs.
The Haqqani network has been behind the kidnapping of several other Americans in Afghanistan.
