Stronger Hurricane Laura races toward heart of US oil refining industry

Hurricane Laura has strengthened into an "extremely dangerous" Category 4 storm as it barrels toward the Louisiana and Texas coasts. "Little time remains to protect life and property," the National Hurricane Center said Wednesday. The hurricane is on the verge of becoming a Category 5 hurricane before it potentially makes landfall late Wednesday or early Thursday, after which it is expected to rapidly weaken. Laura is expected to be the most powerful hurricane to hit the U.S. this year. At least 20 million people are in the storm's path and over half a million people have been ordered to evacuate. The hurricane center warned of potentially catastrophic and life-threatening storm surge, extreme winds and flash flooding Wednesday night along the northwest Gulf Coast. Laura's maximum sustained winds have increased to 150 mph, and is located about 75 miles south of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and about 75 miles south-southeast of Port Arthur, Texas.
