CBP: Total of 450 miles of new border wall to be completed by end of the year
[KFOXtv] Immigration was a major focus of the 2016 presidential election.

It hasn't been a big part of the conversation this time around, due largely to the pandemic.

The migrant crisis from last year all but went away, due largely to the Trump Administration's controversial Remain in Mexico Policy. Asylum seekers are made to wait in Mexico while their case is processed. Then there were the changes made after the pandemic hit, that allowed border agents to deport people who crossed illegally in a matter of hours.

And then, there is the border wall. CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan said that 360 miles of border wall has been built under the Trump administration. More than 100 miles of that is in the El Paso sector. There has been new construction near downtown and all along the Border Highway, where the existing 18-foot fence is being replaced with 30-foot barriers.

Morgan said the agency is building about 10 miles of wall a week, and they are hoping to hit 450 miles by the end of the year.

As far as illegal border crossings are concerned, in 2019, the Border Patrol had almost a million encounters with migrants colonists crossing into the U.S. In fiscal year 2020, that number dropped to 458,000, a drop of more than 50 percent.

And there was a big change in demographics: When it came to family units being apprehended at the border, that number went from 530,000 last fiscal year, to less than 80,000 this fiscal year, that's a drop of 87 percent.

But Morgan says those drops are due largely to the Trump administration's policies at the border.

"If those initiatives and policies and tools are stopped or taken away, I'm telling you you're going to see a crisis that's going to make last year's crisis look like child's play. Because the economic drivers are going to push. The issue is how are we able to encounter them and deal with them. If you remove MPP, which is really what ended catch-and-release, we're going to be back to catch-and-release and that was one of the biggest pull factors. They knew once they made it to American soil they were going to be released to the United States," said Morgan.

The ACLU and Democratic politicians have said that MPP, the Remain in Mexico policy, is illegal and that it denies an asylum seeker's rights to seek asylum here while their case is being reviewed.

In fact, the Biden campaign has said that Joe Foreign Policy Whiz Kid Biden
...Candidate for president in 2020. When the stock market crashed, Franklin Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened.'...
- if elected president - would undo Trump's policies and "reassert America's commitment to asylum seekers and refugees."
