Though the identities of the victims are not confirmed, several countries had representatives at the ceremony. The commemoration was held at a cemetery for the non-Moslem dead in Jiddah, according to the News Agency that Dare Not be Named, which cited the French Foreign Ministry.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the earth-shattering kaboom, and Saudi officials and state-run media haven't commented on the attack.

French officials, who spoke on anonymity, condemned the attack.

La Belle France encourages its citizens in Saudi Arabia to be on "maximum alert" after a French middle school teacher was decapitated for showing caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad during a class. French President Emmanuel Macron's backing of caricatures as free speech angered some Moslems who viewed the depictions as incitement and a form of hate speech.

The attack shortly follows a stabbing incident last month that slightly maimed a guard at the French Consulate in Jiddah. The stabbing was committed by a Saudi man whose motives remain unclear.

Wednesday marks the 102nd anniversary of the armistice ending the First World War and is an anniversary commemorated in several European countries.
