One of former senator John McCain’s pet anti-Assad groups, the Northern Storm Brigade formed in 2011 from a group of smugglers in the city of Azaz in northern Syria that controlled the Bab al-Salam border crossing. They folded in the face of ISIS expansion, fleeing to Turkey. Now they’re part of Turkey’s irregulars, the so-called Free Syrian Army, but that clearly hasn’t given them the backbone to stand up against the local Kurds, either.
