Deputy kills attacking dog, then kills angry owner, police say
[MLive] A man and his dog were shot and killed by police Wednesday evening when an animal-at-large complaint quickly escalated into an animal attack followed by a police shooting in Hillsdale County, police say.A Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office Deputy was dispatched at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, to a dog-at-large complaint at a residence in the 6500 block of S. Edon Road in Reading Township, according to the Michigan State Police. The deputy arrived at the home and was immediately attacked by the dog and bitten, leading the deputy to fatally shoot the animal, police said. The dog’s owner, 32-year-old Oscar Herrera, was upset the deputy shot his dog and confronted him armed with a knife, according to police. The deputy shot Herrera as well, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The deputy was taken to an area hospital to be treated for dog bite injuries. Beyond stating the deputy has more than seven years of experience in law enforcement, he is not being identified at this time, police said. Detectives with the Michigan State Police First District Special Investigation Section are investigating the shooting and will submit its finding to the Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office for review once completed.
