Police free schoolgirl hostages in Germany
Four schoolgirls held by an Iranian man armed with two knives were freed by police after a five-hour hostage-taking in western Germany, a police spokesman said. The man, believed to be in his 50s, had taken them hostage after boarding a bus and then forced the girls, aged from 11 to 16, into the cellar of a suburban house in the town of Ennepetal near Wuppertal. Police said the girls were fine, but did not provide any information on the condition of the hostage-taker, and refused to comment on media reports that he was an asylum-seeker who was demanding that his children be allowed to join him in Germany.
