Pro-Russian Z punishable in Bavaria, risk of fine or prison
[NU] Anyone showing the pro-Russian Z symbol in Bavaria can count on criminal prosecution. That says the Minister of Justice of the southern German state Georg Eisenreich. Criminal law allows prosecution of people who defend certain crimes, including violent crimes, he says.

The war that Russia is waging in Ukraine is against international law and is criminal, the minister said. The Public Prosecution Service therefore takes action against anyone who expresses ideological support for that war.

"Freedom of expression is a great asset in our constitution," Eisenreich told DPA news agency . "However, freedom of expression ends where criminal law begins."

Many Russian army vehicles participating in the battle in Ukraine are painted with a letter Z. Why is not clear. Possibly the letter stands for the word "zapad", which means west. The letter has quickly become a pro-Russian symbol.

Anyone walking around with the Z symbol in Bavaria risks a fine or a prison sentence of up to three years.
