China’s population is about to shrink for the first time since the great famine struck 60 years ago. Here’s what it means for the world

It seems reasonable to assume that she is working from official Communist Chinese statistics, which it seems reasonable to assume are between somewhat and a great deal improved over reality. The great famine was the massive starvation caused by Mao Tse Tung’s Great Leap Forward (1959-1961) which resulted in the intentional deaths of between 15 million and 55 million Chinese. Yet after four extraordinary decades in which China’s population has swelled from 660 million to 1.4 billion, its population is on track to turn down this year, for the first time since the great famine of 1959-1961.
