Gang rape victim fears revenge
Hours before the verdict in a high-profile gang rape trial in which 14 men face the death penalty, the victim said she had been threatened with revenge if they were convicted. Thirty-year-old Mukhtaran Mai told Reuters rival tribesmen had threatened to kill members of her family if their relatives were convicted in Saturday's ruling and appealed to the government for a safer place to live. "They have told us that if their four people are sentenced to death, they would kill eight of our men," she said. "Not only my family, but also those who supported us are being threatened with dire consequences."In a civilized country, the relatives of those convicted would put bags over their heads, refuse to appear in public, and apologize profusely to the victim for barbarism of their relatives.
