Baja California's attorney general unexpectedly resigns, citing "personal reasons"

Marina del Pilar Ávila on Friday recognized Carpio’s tenure and said she would send a list of candidates to Congress to choose the next attorney general. "Carpio’s work at the helm of the Baja California Attorney General’s Office has revitalized its institutional capacities while generating others that will allow for better investigations for the benefit of society, a legacy that will last for generations to come," she said in a statement. Carpio’s resignation comes unexpectedly. A day earlier he held a press conference to talk about recent homicide cases in the state. Carpio was elected by Congress in January 2022 for a six-year term. The murders of Tijuana journalists Margarito Martínez and Lourdes Maldonado took place at the beginning of his term. In both cases, the men who carried out the killings have been sentenced, but not the individuals suspected of ordering the acts. .
