China quietly carried out a sweeping military operation this week in the Western Pacific itslargest naval deployment in decades

Earlier this week, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) conducted a massive joint military exercise around the Taiwan Strait and Western Pacific, targeting the entire first island chain.
Taiwan’s military spokesperson said the scale of the naval deployment was the largest since the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis. In a notable first, Eastern, Northern, and Southern Theater Commands participated together in coordination.
According to Taiwan security sources, Chinese aircraft simulated attacks on foreign naval ships, practiced driving away military and civilian aircraft and intercepting commercial vessels during a “blockade exercise,” and rehearsed disrupting sea routes.
“The real objective appears to be asserting control within the first island chain and establishing strategic deterrence ahead of the U.S. presidential transition,” a senior Taiwanese national security official told AFP.
PLA designated 7 reserved airspace zones east of Zhejiang and Fujian. ROCArmedForces have identified PLA Eastern, Northern, and Southern Theater Command naval formations, along with Coast Guard vessels, entering areas around the Taiwan Strait and the Western Pacific.
