Replacing a T-72 tank gun barrel in field conditions
[X]
From the posting:
Tank crews from the Alexander Nevsky Brigade carried out a scheduled replacement of gun barrels on their active combat vehicles. The brigade’s Telegram channel shared footage of the process on a T-72B3 tank.
Alexander Nevsky Brigade is a component of the Russian 336th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade.
At the start, the interior of the old barrel is shown, revealing the extent of wear caused by intensive use. By the time of filming, the thermal insulation sleeve had already been removed. The fume extractor, which channels propellant gases away from the breech, was the last component left to be dismantled.
Thanks to modern tank designs, there’s no need to remove the turret. The barrel tube can simply be unscrewed in place using a sledgehammer and the crane of a maintenance vehicle.
Once that’s done, a brand-new smoothbore barrel is installed in reverse order.
It was noted that, after final testing, the tanks would be returned to combat missions.
