Australian police acting like Rambo claims arrested Imam
The spiritual leader of Australia's 300,000 Muslims was leading prayers at Lakemba mosque a day after his roadside arrest, accusing police of acting in a "Rambo way" and the Federal Government of political point scoring.
Sounds like His Excellency the Grand Mufti is acting like Diana Ross...
Sheik Taj el-Din Al Hilaly, who carries the title of Mufti of Australia and is imam of Lakemba mosque in Sydney, condemned the Federal Government's $15 million counter-terrorism advertising campaign as a political game played to win votes. He said he was disappointed the Government had chosen to "import" a terrorism problem it did not have. "There has not been any terrorist act in Australia [and] I don't believe there's any credible threat of a terrorist attack in Australia," he said through an interpreter.
"Why get worked up when there aren't any corpses yet? Well, not in Australian streets, anyway. Just wait... There's lotsa time."
Sheik Al Hilaly, 62, is facing charges of resisting arrest and assaulting police, as well as three other traffic charges, after he was pulled over on King Georges Road, Wiley Park on Monday. He claims he has scratches and bruises from handcuffs, while Campsie police superintendent John Richardson said the arresting officer had grazed knuckles from the incident.
Not from dusting the Mufti's nose, unfortunately...
