More Cattle Rustlin’ Going On
Two days of fighting between scores of rival tribes using spears and guns killed at least 52 people in northeastern Uganda, an army spokesman said Friday. The clashes erupted Monday when Pokot tribes crossed the border from neighbouring Kenya and attacked Karamojong herdsmen in Nakapiripirit district, 380 kilometres northeast of Kampala, said Maj. Shaban Bantariza. The fighting ended Tuesday when the army intervened, Bantariza said. At least 35 Pokot and 17 Karamojong were killed, he said, adding that the death toll could rise as more bodies are discovered in the remote area. Both the Karamojong and the Pokot tribes are nomadic herders who traditionally attack neighbouring tribes to steal cattle. In recent years, the practice has become deadly as small arms have filtered into the hands of the tribesmen.
That'll do it
The surviving Pokot tribesmen escaped with dozens of cattle after launching the latest raid, Bantariza said.
"Git yer shootin irons, boys! We'll teach them thar Poko's they can't git away with that no more!"
