More Troops Preparing to Deploy
From Eyewitness News - Fayetteville, NC.
Eyewitness News has learned more troops from the heart of Carolina are making plans after getting word they'll be shipped out to southwest Asia. Medical teams at Fort Bragg are getting reading to deploy. Sources close to the deployment of troops to southwest Asia at the Pentagon tell Eyewitness News about 25,000 members of the 18th Airborne Corps, which has its command at Fort Bragg, will be deployed as part of the troop build up for possible war against Iraq. Now, many of those troops will not come from Fort Bragg itself, but other units under command of the 18th Airborne Corps. We've already seen the 3rd Infantry Division from Fort Stewart get shipped out. They are under Fort Bragg's command. And Eyewitness News has learned that a large element of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum New York and parts of the 101st Airborne Division will also be sent to either Qatar or Kuwait. Both of those units are also under Fort Bragg's command. Locally, sources say the 44th Medical Brigade is making preparations to deploy. We're told at least 30 doctors from Womack Army Medical Center have been told to get ready to be sent overseas. We're also told their replacements have already been hired. In addition to the doctors, supporting Fort Bragg medical units, military police, communications specialists, soldiers from the First Corps Support Command known as "COSCOM," and engineers are being sent in support of the yet un-named operation.
Pentagon sources tell Eyewitness News those units will ship out in the next six to eight weeks.
Beginning to look like the end of February
