Commander Hazrat Ali said his forces had taken one of two peaks on Enzeri Zur mountain. Hundreds of Al Qaeda fighters had made a stand there after being flushed from their cave shelters overnight by massive U.S. bombing and raids by U.S. troops. "We were successful. We captured a lot of caves," Ali said as his troops staged mop-up operations. "The largest ones were full of documents and personal belongings. Al Qaeda fighters had come under heavy shelling as they tried to climb down a mountain and flee into neighboring Pakistan, just one hill away. Afghan troops said dozens of heavily armed U.S. soldiers made lightning raids against Al Qaeda command centers overnight and returned to a camp in the nearby village of Pacir before sunrise. |
