Bush pushes Israel to let Yasser go to the prom
2002-03-26
  • President Bush leaned on the Israelis again Monday to let Arafat attend the Beirut summit and return unhindered. The White House says the Palestinian leader must do more to stop terrorism, and the Israelis won't agree on a cease-fire unless he does. ABCNEWS talked with Arafat at his headquarters, where he insisted he has been doing all he can.
Oooh. Petey Jennings! Bet that was a hard-ball interview..

"They are putting on my shoulders conditions," Arafat told ABCNEWS. "Do you accept it if you are in my place?"
Sure. Guess one man's unacceptable conditions are another's reasonable requests.

"I am making a 100 percent effort," he continued. "But no one can get 100 percent results except God."
Guess one man's 100% effort is another man's stubborn obstructionism.

Arafat also refused to accept the possibility that after leaving West Bank, he might not be able to return home. "Is there any law to prevent to me to come back to my homeland? This is my right," he said.
Well, Jordan didn't let you come back in. Guess you could always go back to Tunisia. Or won't they let you back in, either?

With trust between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government at an all-time low, Arafat called for the deployment of international observers.
He keeps coming back to that suggestion. But nobody wants to send troops to be Hamas targets or for Hezbollah to plant another 500-pounder to go off while they sleep.

"Tell your people the facts which is going on the ground," he told ABCNEWS. "How much our people are suffering. We are human beings. We are the only people now who are under occupation. Can you understand what's the meaning of that? Not to forget this is the real terrorism, this occupation."
Nice interview, Petey. Yasser's people are suffering because the national sport is explosives. If they spent less time waving guns and screaming and exploding, the entire area might be able to do something drastic like get some (non-lethal) industries going, give the young goobers with the rags wrapped around their faces jobs, and establish a little peace and order. But Yasser hasn't a clue how that's done. Not a clue.
