The U.S. Air Force has begun preparations to move its Gulf headquarters from Saudi Arabia to Qatar to bypass Riyadh's objections to military action against Iraq, Britain's Guardian newspaper said on Wednesday. The newspaper said Qatar's al-Udeid air base had already become important to Washington for its Afghan campaign and that reports of U.S. trucks moving from Saudi Arabia to Qatar earlier in March may be related to the conflict there. But it quoted a senior executive of a Saudi contracting firm as saying that several companies had been invited to prepare bids to move computers and electronics from the Prince Sultan air base in Saudi Arabia over the border to Qatar. This would suggest a more permanent relocation, the newspaper quoted analysts as saying.
