U.S. planes attack site in southern Iraq
2002-07-24
For the second time in recent days U.S. warplanes bombed a military communications site in southern Iraq, officials said Tuesday. A brief announcement by the U.S. Central Command said Monday's attack was in response to earlier instances of Iraqi air defense forces using radar and surface-to-air guns against U.S. and British planes that monitor a "no fly" zone over southern Iraq. Monday's attack and a similar one last Thursday against the same communications target, were acts of self defense, the Central Command said. The site was near Diwaniyah, about 80 miles southeast of Baghdad.
