| Al-Qaeda threatens to assassinate Iranian diplomats |

| Tehran Times In an emergency meeting of Iranian diplomats and representatives at the embassy in Kabul, the secretary of Iran's Embassy warned of high risk of being targeted by terrorists. The secretary noted that Al-Qaeda members of Arab origin who knew the local languages and wore Afghan costumes had entered Kabul with the aim of carrying out a suicide bombing against the Iranian Embassy and killing Iranian diplomats. Planting bombs in diplomatic vehicles and an explosion in front of the Embassy's main entrance are included in the Al-Qaeda members' plans, he said. The Iranian diplomat expressed his grave concern that the embassy, as well as the representative offices of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Broadcasting Organization (IRIB), and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) lacked any means of defense and security and called for better security. The Medes and the Persians weren't particularly concerned about us taking out the Talibs. They couldn't make their airspace available for face reasons, but they were happy to continue their support for the Northern Alliance and let us tromp the Kabul government. I seem to remember that there were a couple assassinations of Iranian diplos in Kabul, and in Pakistan they're also considered fair game. |
