British Task Force reaches Cyprus
2003-01-27
A tornado has caused extensive damage to shops and property near the Cypriot port of Limassol.
The main story was on the tornado, but there was a throw-away line at the bottom that caught my eye.
Bad weather also delayed the arrival of the 15-ship British naval task force that was gathering off Cyprus on Monday to head on to the Gulf, according to officials at the British base near Limassol.
This is the Ark Royal task force. I'm not a expert on British naval movements, but isn't Cyprus a little far, east? Pretty close to those Turkish ports. Of course, they may always stop at the British base there, but.....

#3  How good is their base in Cyprus? Might be the best place to top off and get supplies that side of Gibraltar. Can't imagine the Egyptians would be happy to see a British carrier force pull up in Alexandria, given memories of 1956.

#2  I was just looking at a map and wondering why they went so far east. More direct route would have been down center of the Med by Malta, then thru the Suez Canel. Maybe their timetable allows for a show the flag stop in Cyprus. It must be my devious mind at work.

#1  Perhaps making a point with the Turks on Cyprus?

I guess if they're headed for the Gulf, they'll go through the Suez Canal. Otherwise, flying over Jordan and Israel? This is the same deployment that the Truman is on, makes you wonder what else is cooking?
