Iraq envoy says missing Italian reporters alive
2003-03-30
Iraqi Ambassador to Moscow Abbas Khalaf hereon Saturday said seven missing Italian reporters are alive, stressing that they are now in Baghdad. Khalaf, speaking at a news conference, said the Italian reporters who went missing in southern Iraq are currently awaiting the authorization of the Iraqi Information Ministry to resume their activities in the country. The reporters, he said, who had gone to Basra with the US-British troops have been taken to Baghdad by the Iraqi security forces. "This shows that Basra is still under Iraqi control," Khalaf said. The Iraqi envoy further stated that some 10,000 Russian volunteershad enrolled at the Iraq Embassy to join the troops defending the country against the US-British forces.
That should be an interesting experience for them...
He said a certain number of Arab and Muslim volunteers are already participating in the defense. Elsewhere in his remarks, Khalaf said he doubted if US oil companies would be able to take up oil projects in the country. "As long as the Iraqis are alive, the US companies will never receive the authorization to work in the country," he said. "However, there is no doubt that Russian enterprises as well as those of friendly countries will continue work in Iraqi oilfields."
"Yasss, my good friends. We're gonna take care of you, just as soon's we get them pesky hegemonists outta the way..."
