QUIETLY, U.S. AND TURKEY COOPERATE IN IRAQ |
2003-10-13 |
Turkey and the United States have been quietly cooperating in Iraq. Turkish and U.S. forces have coordinated in missions in northern Iraq. Hundreds of Turkish soldiers have been integrated into a coalition force that patrols the Kurdish areas of Iraq near the Kurdish border. The joint U.S.-Turkish force is called the Joint Iraqi Security Company. Turkish special operations forces have joined the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division for the mission. The U.S.-Turkish company has its headquarters in Mosul in northern Iraq. U.S. officials said the Turkish and American soldiers have not encountered any serious problems. |

#4 Turkish has nothing in common with Arabic (If my memory is good Turkish is member of the Turko-Mongol group, Arabic is semitic) or with Kurdish (Arian group). Of course Turkey can provide translators from her Kurdish minority... provides she thinks they are loyal. |

#3 Turkish special operations forces are not exactly translators. Shortly described they are anti-terror/guerrilla units, operating with similar guerrilla tactics. Their objective is mainly tracing guerrilla groups in mountainous areas and signalling their GPS coordinates to helicopter squads who bomb the guerrillas to Walhalla. |

#2 I'd guess that most of those incorporated are serving as translators and only carry weapons for self defense. Anybody know? |

#1 This is pretty dicey, but if we can leave nothern Iraq with lasting stability, we will have done a good thing. |
